Keep your gutters clean
Gutters are an important weatherproofing tool for your house. By funneling water away from the house and foundation, they prevent damage.
When gutters aren't working properly, water runs across windows and doors, and down the side of the house. The water can seep into the house, damaging walls and floors, and weakening the foundation.
Keeping an eye on your gutters and spending a few hours twice a year can keep your gutters in good working condition—and keep your home safe and dry.
- Clean gutters of all debris. When you are finished cleaning, flush out the gutters with a hose to ensure water runs through all sections of the gutter.
- When working on your gutters, use the right tools to prevent damage. Don't rest a ladder directly on the gutters—they're not able to support a lot of weight.
- Inspect gutters and flashing for damage. Check for missing nails, loose downspouts and joints, dents and rust.
- Trim trees around gutters to keep branches and leaves out of gutters.
- Check the roof for missing shingles and general wear and tear. Make any necessary repairs.
- Don't forget the gutters on your garage. Clean and inspect them as you would the gutters on the house, even if the garage is detached.
