Here are the duties, qualifications, activities and other details for many of the internship opportunities we offer at Allied and Nationwide offices around the country. Visit the Careers section to search current openings in your area and apply online.

Claims

Claims interns will settle property/casualty claims over the phone directly with the claimant and investigate/negotiate/settle the claim over the phone and computer. Interns will help determine coverage, establish reserves, and evaluate loss amounts, and complete special projects as assigned.

Qualifications: Junior or senior status, strong communication skills, enjoys working with the public, a strong interest in a full-time claims position, available to work full-time May-August

COBOL programming

As a programming intern, you'll become familiar with Nationwide's systems environment, and work on assigned programming projects in addition to a variety of networking projects.

Qualifications: Junior or senior status, programming knowledge of COBOL and JCL, experience with DB2 or SQL beneficial, available to work full-time May-August.

Java programming

As a Java/J2EE programming intern, you'll become familiar with Nationwide's systems environment, and work on assigned programming projects in addition to a variety of networking projects.

Qualifications: Junior or senior status with a major in MIS or Computer Science, programming knowledge of Java/J2EE, ColdFusion knowledge a plus, available to work full-time May-August.

IT Q/A testing

Under moderate guidance, Q/A testing interns carry out procedures to ensure that all information systems products and services meet organization standards and end-user requirements. Duties include testing of software to ensure proper operation and freedom from defects on projects with limited scope and/or business risk.

Qualifications: Junior or senior status with a major in MIS or Information Technology, excellent analytical and decision making skills, strong oral and written communication skills, knowledge of QA/Testing tools, available to work during the spring semester and/or May-August.

IT systems analysis

As an IT systems analysis intern, you'll work with experienced systems analysts to gather business requirements, evaluating impact to our business partners, and perform administrative functions. There will be some exposure to IT project management and development activities.

Qualifications: Junior or senior status with a major in MIS or business, excellent analytical and decision making skills, experience with Excel and Access, available to work full-time May – August.

Subrogation

As a subrogation intern you'll support existing reps in their day-to-day activities; complete follow up calls and collection activity in order to expedite the receipt of recoverable funds; manage pending files, including but not limited to, review of files for needed supports, sending out requests, reviewing arbitration websites for response and hearing information; and other duties as assigned.

Technical writing

As a technical writing intern you will work with programming and business areas to develop system documentation utilizing a variety of software tools. Other responsibilities include agent communications and workflow analysis.

Qualifications: Junior or senior status, technical writing experience, excellent analytical and decision making skills, strong oral and written communication skills, experience with online documentation, desktop publishing and/or multimedia software is preferred, available to work full-time May-August

Underwriting

Commercial lines, personal lines and agribusiness underwriting interns provide support for the independent agents who sell our business. Intern responsibilities will be project focused and will include partnering with an underwriter and independent agents.

Qualifications: Junior or senior status, strong written and communication skills, PC knowledge, a strong interest in a full-time underwriting position, available to work full-time May-August and possibly part-time during the school year

Activities

Des Moines, Iowa-area interns will participate in additional activities including:

  • Community service activities with Habitat for Humanity, Wilke House, and Children and Families Urban Ministries
  • Two day technical insurance training challenge
  • Job shadow opportunities
  • Innovative project work to be presented to Nationwide executives
